Choosing between Thomas Jefferson's Monticello and George Washington's Mount Vernon depends largely on your location and interests. Both are major Virginia historical sites, but they offer different architectural and historical focuses. Monticello is Jefferson's architectural project on a mountaintop, while Mount Vernon is Washington's estate near the capital.

What makes Monticello's architecture unique?

Monticello is a neoclassical structure designed entirely by Thomas Jefferson.

Jefferson began designing his home in 1769. The 11,000-square-foot house features 43 rooms and a distinct octagonal Dome Room on the top floor. It is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, an honor it received in 1987.

How much time do you need at Monticello?

A typical visit to Monticello takes 2.5 to 3.5 hours.

Your time at Monticello includes exploring the David M. Rubenstein Visitor Center, the 11,000-square-foot house, and the grounds. You should also allocate time for Mulberry Row, the industrial hub where enslaved workers lived and labored.

What can you see in the gardens?

Monticello features an extensive 1,000-foot-long terraced vegetable garden.

Jefferson used the grounds for botanical experiments, growing over 330 vegetable varieties. The flower gardens are especially active in spring (April-May). Monticello's mountaintop location gives it a distinct agricultural history that shaped the 5,000-acre plantation.

Can I visit both in one trip?

Visiting both requires a full day of driving or a multi-day trip.

Because Monticello is in Charlottesville and Mount Vernon is near D.C., doing both in a single day is difficult. A guided day-trip bus tour from Washington D.C. takes 2.5 to 3 hours each way just to reach Charlottesville.
